Golden paste is a turmeric based paste that is created by mixing ground turmeric, black pepper and Extra Virgin Olive Oil with water. When you make it yourself, you can make sure the ingredients are NO GMO and organic! Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, and has recently become increasingly popular in Western culture as an alternative to the anti-inflammatory prescription or over-the-counter pain medication for both humans and animals.
Golden Paste Recipe for Dogs
Doug English, the vet who created the original golden paste recipe, shares his recipe in a private Facebook group, called “Turmeric users group”. However, I have made some adjustment & strictly use Extra Virgin Olive Oil instead of the Coconut Oil in my Golden Paste version. The benefit of Extra Virgin Olive Oil is far beyond Coconut Oil & it tastes far superior too in case you want to enjoy the golden paste yourself.
- 5 tablespoons No GMO & organic turmeric powder (read the packaging label)
- 1 cup water
- ⅓ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Boil half cup of the water, then add turmeric in it, mix it well before lowering the heat and simmering until it turns into thick paste (this should take 5 minutes). Add the black pepper, and the other half cup of water, mix them well. Remove the paste from direct heat and pour in EVOO after it’s cooled down (about 10 minutes later). Mix it nicely. You may store the Golden Paste in a glass jar & keep it in the fridge up to 2 weeks. I usually give 1 tbsp daily for large dogs, adjust the amount accordingly for small dogs & cats.
When combined with black pepper, turmeric in the paste is better absorbed into your dog’s blood. Turmeric on its own has anti-inflammatory powers— and it’s a great pain reliever. It has even been recorded by individual users to have a positive effect on cancer cells. If your pet has inflammatory diseases such as cancer or arthritis, turmeric can be especially beneficial. However, if taken alone, only a small amount of the active component in Turmeric (called curcumin) gets absorbed into your pup’s bloodstream. By combining curcumin with piperine (a compound in black pepper) the bioavailability increases dramatically. The EVOO or coconut oil in the recipe makes the liver metabolize the curcumin slower, so it’s better absorbed by your dog. Plus, EVOO (as well as the Coconut Oil) has the benefits of it’s own.
Keep in mind, the Golden Paste should be served with food. For our dogs, I usually add a whole raw egg, freeze-dried animal liver, and some raw veggies. If your pets don’t like raw veggies, you may steam the veggie for a few minutes.
